Cherokee Nation held an awards banquet for fire departments within the tribe's jurisdiction. The Dewey Volunteer Fire Department was selected Fire Department of the Year, and Fire Chief Tom Smith received a plaque stating so. Dewey Fire Department Lt. James Smith also received an award for Firefighter of the Year for Region 8, as well as the first Heroism Award that Cherokee Nation has awarded.
At the awards banquet, Cherokee Nation also awarded the Dewey Volunteer Fire Department with $2,500 for the purchase of equipment to help the citizens of Dewey. This wasn't the first grant given by Cherokee Nation to our Fire Department. The City appreciates the tribe's continuing generosity.
